While there are countless renowned strains in the world of cannabis cultivation, the legendary Blueberry strain has consistently proved its quality because of its potency and calming effects. The Blueberry strain is an 80% indica-dominant hybrid known for its long-lasting body high revered by recreational consumers who prefer to relax and sit back at the end of a long day.
Packing a hefty 15 to 24% of THC content, this potent strain impresses even the most experienced consumers. Characterized by sizeable buds and exquisite, eye-catching blue hues, the Blueberry strain boasts a pleasant scent mixed with the sweetness and acidity of forest fruits and notable floral hints.
A Brief History of Blueberry Strain
Like many other famed strains, the roots of the Blueberry variety go back to the ‘70s and ‘80s. During this period, cultivators in the United States were focused on cross-breeding strains from all over the world to come up with new varieties. One of these experimental breeders was DJ Short, who is known to cannasseurs as the “father” of cannabis genetics development. His efforts have produced many other recognized, and well-loved strains, such as Blue Velvet, Cocoa Kush, Honey Bee, and Mountain Jam, among others.
During this experimental stage of cannabis cultivation, most cannabis breeders in the United States were working with landrace sativa and indica genetics coming from Thailand, Mexico, Panama, and Colombia. With all of the trial and errors and his access to all these plants, DJ Short applied his expertise to create new floral lines using three plants that he discovered.
After a period of development, he was able to establish his two best strains: Blueberry and Flo. Flo was created using the initial floral lines of Oregon Purple Thai, and was crossed to the indica male. As he continued to work along this process, DJ Short was able to create the Blueberry strain by crossing the earlier lines to Afghani and Juicy Fruit hybrids.
What this means is that there is a little of both the sativa origins in the Blueberry strain, while there is only Purple Thai in the Flo. The original Blueberry strain was bred leaning towards an indica outcome, while a more sativa-dominant version was also developed and refined, becoming what we know today as Blueberry sativa.
Because of its well-rounded effects and high zing, the Blueberry strain has won several Cannabis Cups awards, bagging the first place honours in both the Indica Cup category and Overall category in the 2000 awards.

This Strain Is Known to Help With...
Like all potent types of strains, there are some effects that can happen when an inexperienced consumer lights up an amount that is beyond their tolerance. Dryness of the mouth, droopy eyes, paranoia, dizziness, and headaches are some of its side effects.
Cultivating Blueberry Strain
The Blueberry strain is a straightforward plant to cultivate as long as special pruning techniques are performed to create the highest possible yield. It can be grown indoors or outdoors, however, it is important to note that in order to cultivate it successfully in an outdoor setting, the process demands specific conditions, such as moderate humidity and daytime temperatures between 22C and 26C. Blueberry strain plants are better suited to indoor growing, as they are usually small and bushy, and rarely exceed 3.5 feet in height characterized by strong lateral branching.
Blueberry strains possess an impressive leaf-to-bud ratio, which means that cultivating requires minimal trimming of broad fan leaves. To bring out its notable lavender to red colour accents, growers should “shock” the plants by introducing cold temperatures during the later vegetative stage, just before flowering. When grown indoors, plants are expected to flower within eight to 10 weeks, with an expected harvest around mid-October. During the maturity stage, the Blueberry strain packs a high yield of approximately 1.5 ounces of flower per square foot of plant.
An Overview of Blueberry Strain
Truly considered a celebrated piece of cannabis history, the Blueberry strain is an ideal pick for consumers seeking repose, or for individuals who want to experience a therapeutic calmness for the mind or to rid it of anxiety-inducing thoughts. Even experienced smokers describe its quality high as a “one hit and quit” type of strain, as its effects are immediately felt and can prevent consumers from performing high-level physical activities.
Its medical-grade, potency level is prescribed for individuals experiencing pain conditions, for both short-term and long-term chronic pain related to diseases. The tranquil effects of the Blueberry strain help relieve some symptoms of mild to severe mental health concerns, and can induce a lasting sleep that serves as a natural cure to insomnia.
